Sri Sudarshana Homa

Sri Sudarshana Homa is a sacred fire ritual involving the chanting of Vedic hymns and the offering of positive-energy materials (Prana) to purify the environment and the physical energy body. This process creates a pathway for the eternal flow of energy, dispelling negativity and forming a protective shield around the participants. The Homa also purifies the surrounding space. Sri Sudarshana Homa is performed to invoke the grace of Lord Vishnu's celestial weapon, the Sudarshana Chakra. This powerful discus, with over a million spikes and 108 serrated edges, is considered the only divine weapon that remains in constant motion. Certain scriptures suggest that it represents the galaxies of the cosmos. The combined energies of all three Hindu trinities are present in this chakra, which is held on Vishnu’s index finger. Every time evil tries to dominate the good, Lord Vishnu manifests on earth to restore dharma and uses the Sudarshana Chakra to destroy the evil. This form of Lord Vishnu is known as the Sudarshana Avatar.

Procedure

Sri Sudarshana Homa can relieve and protect participants from strong enemies and competition. The Vedic hymns recited during the ritual reverberate at high frequencies, promoting healing and rejuvenation of the physical body, and preventing accidents and unexpected losses. The main mantras chanted during the Homa include the Sudarshana Mantra Japa, Sri Sudarshana Sathakam, Sudarshana Ashtotara, and Sudarshana Ashtakam, accompanied by chakra seed mantras, the Moola Mantra, and the Gayathri Mantra. These mantras are chanted 108 or 1008 times during the Pradhan Homa to invoke the energy of the chakra. The key steps in the homa include:

  • Anujnaa – Seeking permission
  • Aachamanam – Cleansing with the water element
  • Ganapathy Puja – Invoking Lord Ganesha
  • Kalasa and Yantra Avahana – Invocation of sacred objects
  • Sankalpa – Intent of the Homa
  • Sri Sudarshana Homa – Main Homa and sloka recital
  • Uttaraangam – Gratitude offering
  • Poornaahuti – Final offering
  • Udvaasana – Benediction

Significance

The Sudarshana Homa is highly regarded for its protective power against evil, doshas, and fears. A story from the Rig Veda explains the creation of the Sudarshana Chakra: when demons (asuras) took control of the three worlds and tormented celestial beings and humans, they sought Lord Vishnu's help. Combining Shiva’s energy with his own, Vishnu created the Sudarshana Chakra to destroy the demons. This divine weapon is said to possess the power of a million suns, as it was forged from the very essence of the sun. Devotees who sincerely offer prayers to the Sudarshana Chakra receive multiple blessings from Lord Vishnu. This mighty weapon is believed to protect the universe from evil, and invoking its energy during the Homa purifies the body, mind, and soul. It promotes good health, spiritual progress, and success in all areas of life.
